Vivian Vassar, also known as "Hey Viv!" has been collecting and wearing vintage clothing most of her life. She started thrift shopping with her father and learned at an early age to turn garments inside out to see how they were made and stitched. Her father always said: "The quality shows in the finishing"
In college Viv was known for wearing only vintage clothing and some pretty crazy outfits. Her shopping skills were honed in every thrift store, garage sale and rummage sale she could find. She began to sell to her friends and saw the potential for turning her love of clothing into a business. In 1986 Viv purchased a "fixer upper" building in Staten Island, NY and opened "Hey Viv! Vintage Clothing." The store carried vintage clothing from the 1940's and 50's along with vintage Levi jeans and bellbottoms. In 1999, a friend showed Viv a listing on eBay. "That's for me!" she was heard to exclaim. And within 6 months she had expanded the business to sell on eBay, shipping vintage clothing around the United States and around the world. In 2000, she sold the Port Richmond building, went into the web business full time and built her ecommerce site www.HeyViv.com.
Viv has added Poodle Skirts and a line of retro 50's costumes and accessories to her web site in addition to the women's vintage clothing. Her specialty is plus size vintage and plus size 50's costume clothing. Her clientele includes collectors, costumers for plays and dance companies, theme restaurants, partygoers and people who are looking for something "a little different." She has found that an emphasis on customer service has won her a loyal following. Viv says, "We sell good quality costumes and wearable vintage at reasonable prices and have a super fast turn around."
There's always something new in the Hey Viv ! line of retro 50's clothing. The Hey Viv ! label includes swinging circle skirts and classic capri pants. 50's style prom dresses and aprons are in the design phase and will be produced soon. "I've taken some of the best vintage pieces I've come across and reproduced them in quality fabrics with attention to the details."
