Staten Island Mode - A Look at Dress and Identity on Staten Island

Posted by Vivian Vassar on 20th Jul 2023

Staten Island Mode: Identity, Memory, Fashion - A curatorial project exploring dress and identity on Staten Island.  Opens Saturday July 28, 2023 at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in Snug Harbor, Staten Island, NY.

Fashion scholars, Jenna Rossi-Camus and Alexis Romano, in partnership with the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor, are curating the first-ever fashion exhibition on Staten Island.  The project takes a personal and diverse approach to understanding what people wear and why in relation to local identities.

I'm so happy that Hey Viv ! is a part of Staten Island Mode. During the project's development  I attended workshops and discussed the history of Hey Viv ! from my first vintage store on Port Richmond Ave up to the present day.  I met new and old friends as we delved into why we dress the way we do.  I especially enjoyed seeing the old photographs of families and special events that participants brought in. Each picture has a story and reveals traditions, life changes, and the cultural diversity on Staten Island.

Please check out Staten Island Mode, running from 7/26/23 to 12/31/23.  And say "Hi" to Betty - she's repping Hey Viv  ! in the Gallery.
